My husband and I greatly enjoyed taking the puppy and now beginner class for our pup. He’s gained so much confidence and we as owners have learned so much. This is all thanks to their very experienced trainer, Laurie. Not only does she teach what commands the class lists, but goes above and beyond to answer any questions/home behavior you’re struggling with giving explanation and resolution. We will continue to take the next class after this because we enjoy them so much.

While shopping I noticed a training class going on in the store. Petco markets “positive reinforcement training” so I was shocked to see the trainer grab a golden retriever puppy by the ear and get into its face to scold it. They were working on a “leave it” command and the puppy was struggling to not pick the treat up off the floor. Instead of teaching the puppy, she man handled it and tried to intimidate it into behaving for her. She then got up and made comments about how the puppy did terrible and she has never seen a dog do so bad in front of the whole class. A lack of experience is no excuse for this horrible behavior and I do not recommend anyone work with this trainer. Petco: this was witnessed on 5/18/24 around 4:30. Like I said, I am not the owner but still a horrible thing to witness take place inside your business.

This post is in response to the review left by Savannah Schwartz: Hi all, my wife and I are in this class and were present at the time this observation was made. This adorable golden retriever puppy Elska has been in the class for 2 months now and has worked with and been corrected by the trainer before. This was NOT intimidation, it was correction. Neither the owner of Elska nor anyone else in the class felt that the trainer had overstepped her role as teacher and mentor. The comments about her struggling to perform the "leave it" command was taken out of context by Savannah. She should have clarified before making a post about it and defaming both the character and expertise of this trainer. Savannah, I recommend you take the class because the trainer has done so much for all of us in this class in the short time we've had to work with her. We’ve been coming to Petco for dog training since our dog was 3-4 months old. We have nothing but wonderful experiences with our trainer! Our pup is always so excited to be at Petco. We were so pleased with our experience in the puppy class, we continued into the beginner class. We’ve also learned tips for training at home and continue to have nothing but great experiences. Highly recommend this site if you’re looking for dog training!
